Proofreader meets… Graphic Designer

As part of my marketing strategy to promote my proofreading, copywriting & blogging business, I spend some of my time networking. As a result, I have met some wonderful people working in all sorts of businesses. With my innate interest in “all things business” I invited Dawn Lillington, Graphic Designer at Brand New Dawn, to tell me her business story. Here it is…

Dawn Lillington from Brand New Dawn has been working as a graphic designer for nearly 30 years. The main thrust of Dawn’s experience was gained from large London agencies, where she worked with recognisable household brands such as Rover, Berol, Primark and Guinness on a range of projects including packaging, new product development and product launches. She also ran a business with a partner outside London for many years.

Throughout the course of her career, Dawn has wanted to move closer to the customer and the branding conversation. In 2010 Dawn set up Brand New Dawn in Oxfordshire with the distinct goal of bringing top agency experience, design and creativity to small independent businesses at reasonable prices. This put Dawn right in front of her clients – exactly where she wanted to be.

What is graphic design?

Graphic design is a creative process, used to convey a specific message to a target audience from the client. Dawn’s graphic design expertise is all about brand identity for ambitious companies looking to create the right image that clearly and effectively communicates with their target market.

How do you brief and work with a graphic designer?

A lot of businesses struggle with this one. They have an idea in their mind’s eye, but find it difficult to put it into words. The beauty of working with Dawn is that she can visualise her client’s needs and transform them into images and a design that speaks to their target market.

Once this is agreed, she works on the project herself so nothing is lost in translation and then produces a creative solution that is bang on target.

Dawn’s understanding of branding is innate. She instinctively knows how to create and develop expectations through visual designs to build a brand promise that connects with the target market. She has a quietly confident working style, founded on trust; Dawn delivers the right solution for her clients on budget and on time.

Dawn is currently working on plans to develop half-day brand profiling workshops. Delegates will learn the importance of brand profiling, including how to articulate both the brand essence and the brand personality. Coming from a lady with a wealth of experience working as a graphic designer, topped off with her natural ability to see right through to the heart of the brand, it might be an idea to keep your ears to the ground for the dates.
